General Tamer Akba?

 

General Tamer Akba? was born in Bal?kesir/Ayval?k in 1940. He graduated from the Land War Academy as an Infantry Officer in 1960 and finished the Infantry School in 1961.

After serving as a Platoon Leader and Company Commander with various units of the Turkish Land Forces between 1961 and 1970, he attended the Turkish Army Staff College from 1970 to 1972 and graduated as a General Staff Officer in 1972. From 1972 to 1974 General Tamer Akba? served as Chief, Operations and Training Branch, 16th Mechanized Brigade and Plans Officer in the Operations and Training Branch, 7th Corps in Diyarbak.

From 1974 to 1977 he served as Chief, Operations and Training Branch, 10th Infantry Brigade in Bitlis/Tatvan.

From 1977 to 1980 he served as a Section Chief in the General Staff Officers Branch, Assignments Division, Turkish Land Forces Command. While serving at this command, he attended the NATO Defence College course for six months.

 

From 1974 to 1977 he served as Chief, Operations and Training Branch, 10th Infantry Brigade in Bitlis/Tatvan.  

From 1977 to 1980 he served as a Section Chief in the General Staff Officers Branch, Assignments Division, Turkish Land Forces Command.  While serving at this command, he attended the NATO Defence College course for six months.

After serving as Chief, Land Section, Plans and Policy Division at Headquarters AFSOUTH in Naples, Italy from 1980 to 1983, General Akba? was appointed as Chief of the Faculty at the Armed Forces and National Security College from 1983 to 1984 and commanded the 233rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment of the 6th Infantry Division in ?stanbul from 1984 to 1986.  

Promoted to Brigadier General in 1986, General Akba? was assigned as Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations at Headquarters, Allied Land Forces Southeastern Europe (LANDSOUTHEAST) for two years.  

From 1988 to 1990, General Akba? commanded the 28th Motorized Infantry Brigade until his promotion to Major General in 1990. He served as National Military Representative, Turkey at SHAPE in Mons, Belgium from 1990 to 1992. He then served as Commander, 3rd Mechanized Division in Edirne from 1992 to 1994.

Promoted to Lieutenant General in 1994, General Akba? served as Commander, 4th Corps and Ankara Garrison from 1994 to 1998. He then served as the First Assistant to the Secretary General of the National Security Committee from 1998 until 1999. General Akba?, who assumed command of LANDSOUTHEAST on 16 August 1999, was promoted to the rank of General on 30 August 1999.

General Tamer Akba? is married to Mrs Latife Akba? and has two children.
