Exercise Dynamic Mix 2000

Turkish Thrace Cultural Day

On Sunday, May 28, 2000, exercise participants were afforded the opportunity to visit the historic city of Edirne, Turkey, in far northwest Turkish Thrace.  Below are a few of the sites they saw.

BELOW LEFT:  Exterior view of Selimiye Mosque, built by the famous architect Sinan for the Ottoman Sultan Selim II between the years 1589 and 1595.  The architect Sinan declared this mosque his best work - the result of his mastery of the craft, while saying that the mosque he built for the Sultan Suleyman in Istanbul was only his apprenticeeship.  BELOW RIGHT: Being the second capital city of the Ottoman Empire for a short period, Edirne has various Imperial buildings reflecting the daily life and the architecture of that age.  Many such buildings may be seen on this Edirne shopping street. RIGHT:  Yildirim Beyazit Kulliyesi, built in the 1470's as a combination of a mosque, a school, a hospital and other facilities for the people working in the complex.  One of the largest such complexes in existence, it is no longer in use as such today.
